Eliminated Distribution Plant Inefficiencies

Problem: A major mid-west footwear retailer was plagued with bottlenecks in their distribution center operations. The customer also needed a Third Party operator for their new southern distribution center. ODWCS management was asked to analyze the existing situation and make recommendations that could be used in both old and new locations.

Solutions: Through analysis of the times required for order download, stock replenishment, and order processing, ODWCS determined that all three activities were scheduled independently of each other, which resulted in unbalanced work activity and production bottlenecks.

Benefits: The computer scheduling of stock replenishments was changed to match the time of day when order pick volume was actually required. This improvement level-loaded the production cycle and eliminated both bottlenecks and employee down time. ODW Contract Services was then chosen to operate the customer's new 960,000 sq. ft. distribution center which processes over 100,000 pairs of shoes per day and works four 10-hour days that match delivery service requirements.
